Apply antibiotic ointment or povidone iodine ointment to catheter exit sites during dressing change. Evaluate the catheter insertion site daily by palpation through the dressing to discern tenderness and by inspection if a transparent dressing is in use. Use of chlorhexidine impregnated sponge dressing might be an alternative.
